This project was driven by the client’s desire to capture expansive mountain views while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties. The design is a modern residence inspired by the client’s travels through Mongolia, drawing from the region’s sense of shelter, landscape, and layered enclosure. The architect of record translated these narratives into an elegant home that nestles into the terrain, using partially embedded volumes and layered walls to create a protected, grounded experience—while opening toward some of the strongest southern views in the area.

This project was inspired by our client’s vision of bringing his large family together under one roof — a dedicated place for connection, celebration, and shared memories. Designed as a gathering destination for holidays and milestone events, the home serves as a central hub for generations to come.

At 21,000 square feet, the residence significantly exceeds the area’s typical 6,000-square-foot homes, presenting both an exciting opportunity and a complex challenge. Architect of Record, Steve Morton, carefully analyzed the extensive program while navigating zoning constraints and requirements from authorities having jurisdiction.

By embracing the site’s steep slope, the design strategically carves and embeds volumes into the landscape. This approach allowed the team to balance the ambitious scale of the program with the natural topography, creating a composition that feels grounded and harmonious.

The result is a home that accommodates a large and dynamic program while remaining sensitive to its surroundings. Thoughtful massing and contextual integration ensure the residence complements the rhythm of the mountain terrain and neighboring properties rather than overpowering them.

This project stands as a testament to the team’s ability to solve complex architectural challenges — seamlessly merging scale, function, and context into a cohesive and enduring design.

For this project, the owner envisioned a peaceful retreat—an escape immersed in nature. Located on a lakeshore in Homer, Alaska, the home was designed not only as a private sanctuary but also as a welcoming gathering place for family and friends.

The property takes full advantage of its setting, offering direct access to the lake and uninterrupted views of both sunrise and sunset. The design embraces the surrounding landscape, allowing the owners to fully experience seasonal changes, from quiet mornings by the water to outdoor activities such as fishing and boating.

The result is a residence that balances solitude and connection, providing a serene environment deeply rooted in its natural context.

This project was conceived as a refined, dual-purpose mountain retreat that seamlessly integrates luxury automotive storage with elevated hospitality and entertainment spaces. The lower level is designed to accommodate a curated collection of high-end vehicles while simultaneously functioning as a dynamic venue for gatherings and celebrations. Supporting these uses, the plan incorporates a generously scaled mudroom and a dedicated equipment room, tailored to house ski gear and seasonal equipment essential for year-round exploration in the Alaskan landscape.

Above, the upper level transitions into a private residential enclave. Two master suites are thoughtfully positioned to maximize comfort and views, complemented by an expansive balcony that frames panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountain range. This level provides a deliberate contrast to the activity below—offering a serene, secluded retreat that enhances the overall experience of the residence.
